Why “Saving Tax” Shouldn’t Be Your Main Goal
It’s one of the most common questions accountants get:
“How can I pay less tax?”
And while it’s a fair question, it’s often the wrong focus.
The problem with chasing tax savings
Focusing purely on reducing tax can lead to decisions that don’t actually benefit your business.
For example:
- Spending money unnecessarily
- Holding back growth
- Prioritising short-term wins over long-term strategy
Saving tax isn’t the same as making money.
A better way to think about it
Tax is a by-product of profit.
If your business is growing and generating income, tax will naturally follow.
The goal shouldn’t be to avoid it completely, it should be to manage it effectively.
What actually matters more
Instead of asking “How do I pay less tax?”, ask:
- Is my business profitable?
- Am I structured correctly?
- Am I making smart financial decisions?
These have a much bigger impact over time.
The reality
A business that pays tax is usually a business that’s doing well.
And while no one wants to pay more than they need to, the focus should always be on building something sustainable.
